Cube Modular’s new service for event clients adds a summary of projected transport carbon emissions into quotes, plus a travel footprint report post-event, using ecolibrium’s carbon calculator tool. The information supports clients to maximise the efficiency of deliveries and understand the potential and actual carbon emission savings achieved through Cube’s Continest system.
Headline figures from their reports show carbon emissions savings of 9,588kg for Boardmasters, 9,975kg for Black Deer, 16,788kg for Tartan Heart, and 11,000kg for On The Beach festivals. For those four festivals alone, 112 trucks were taken off the road using Cube’s Continest onsite buildings which are hugely efficient to transport due their flat-packable design.
The service is designed to aid discussion over maximising the efficiency of deliveries to ensure that clients can take advantage of carbon emission savings achieved through the use of the Continest foldable cabin system. Continest’s ten 20ft cabins can be packed and stacked on a single lorry instead of the usual two fixed framed buildings, resulting in an 80% saving in emissions.
In total over 1,000 units have been delivered to more than 40 festivals, music concerts and sporting events, including Chelsea Flower Show, Glastonbury, Formula E London, Monaco E-Prix and the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Total carbon savings from delivering our collapsible cabins to 15 UK festivals alone topped 60,000Kg last summer.

In the case of Tartan Heart Festival near Inverness, Cube used just eight lorries to transport 24x 6m units and 12x 3m units in and out of the festival instead of the thirty which would have been required to transport the equivalent traditional fixed framed cabins. The carbon emissions and savings achieved can be summarised as follows:-
Tartan Heart Transportation Carbon Emissions
No. of trucks used | Total mileage | Carbon emissions (kg) based on DEFRA carbon conversion figures |
8 | 3,872 | 9,593.334 |
Tartan Heart Transportation Carbon Emissions Saved (compared to using traditional fixed framed buildings)
No. of trucks saved | Total mileage | Carbon emissions saved (kg) |
22 | 10,648 | 16,788.335 |
Storage of portable buildings when not in use and when maintenance work is needed contributes to any portable modular building company’s carbon footprint. Typically, units are either stored outside which is subject to weathering and reduces the lifespan of the product or large expanses of warehousing are required, often in multiple locations requiring stock to be moved for maintenance purposes.
The reduction in emissions associated with storage of our Continest units is even higher than for transportation as the units may be stacked ten high. This means that Cube Modular can store its entire fleet under one roof. Our brand-new headquarters in Worcester is centrally located for UK logistics and incorporates the latest standards in energy efficiency.
In contrast to standard container buildings, Continest units are built from parts that are all inherently modular and replaceable, ensuring maximum reuse and recycling capability.
Cube Modular has also ensured that its range of Continest buildings are even more flexible for use as retail, merchandising and box office units as well as accreditation offices, dressing rooms, production offices, security cabins and so on. The company is now in a position to provide the entire event infrastructure, to take full advantage of transport efficiencies.
